Side pot
The term “side pot” in poker is used when the hand includes players with various numbers of chips in the stack. A side pot is created to allow for a difference in bets between players and ensure that everyone taking part in the hand has a chance to win.
The term “side pot” in poker is used when the hand includes players with various numbers of chips in the stack. A side pot is created to allow for a difference in bets between players and ensure that everyone taking part in the hand has a chance to win.
Here’s how to create a side pot:
The players place bets: At various stages of the hand (the flop, turn, or river), players bet or raise. Some of them may place bets that the other players cannot match because they don’t have enough chips.
Creating the main pot: All bets and raises which can be matched by other players form the main pot. This pot will be won by the player with the best hand of cards or by the last remaining player after the reveal.
Creating the side pot: If any players place bets that the other players cannot match, then the side pot is created out of the difference between the bets. This side pot will be won by the player who wins the battle between those who placed these bets.
For example:
Player A has 100 chips.
Player B has 200 chips.
Player C has 300 chips.
Player A bets 50 chips, but player B can’t match this bet as they have fewer chips. As a result, the main pot is 100 chips (Player A’s bet), and the side pot is 50 chips (the difference between Player A’s bet and Player B’s maximum bet).
At the reveal, if Player C wins the hand, they get the main pot (100 chips), and the side pot (50 chips) will go to Player A or B, depending on which of them won their battle.
A side pot may be created in various situations and is a way of ensuring the winnings are distributed fairly in cases where the players have a different number of chips.
